ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Salok, Third Mehl:
ਕਾਮਣਿ ਤਉ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕੰਤੁ ਮਨਾਇ ॥

O bride, decorate yourself, after you surrender and accept your Husband Lord.
ਹੇ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ! ਤਦੋਂ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਬਣਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਖਸਮ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰ ਲਏਂ,
ਮਤੁ ਸੇਜੈ ਕੰਤੁ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਏਵੈ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
Line 8
Otherwise, your Husband Lord will not come to your bed, and your ornaments will be useless.
(ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ) ਮਤਾਂ ਖਸਮ ਸੇਜ ਤੇ ਆਵੇ ਹੀ ਨਾਹ ਤੇ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਐਵੇਂ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਏ।
ਕਾਮਣਿ ਪਿਰ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਤਉ ਬਣਿਆ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

O bride, your decorations will adorn you, only when your Husband Lord's Mind is pleased.
ਹੇ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ! ਜੇ ਖਸਮ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮੰਨ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਬਣਿਆ ਸਮਝ।
ਕੀਆ ਤਉ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਸਹੁ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

Your ornaments will be acceptable and approved, only when your Husband Lord loves you.
ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਖਸਮ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰੇ।
ਭਉ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਤਬੋਲ ਰਸੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

So make the Fear of God your ornaments, joy your betel nuts to chew, and love your food.
ਜੇ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ (ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ) ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਨ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਬਣਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੋਜਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਧਾਰ) ਬਣਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਉਪੇ ਕੰਤ ਕਉ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੋਗੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੧॥
Line 10
Surrender your body and mind to your Husband Lord, and then, O Nanak, He will enjoy you. ||1||
ਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਨ ਮਨ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਪੂਰਨ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦੀ ਹੈ) ਤਾਂ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

ਕਾਜਲ ਫੂਲ ਤੰਬੋਲ ਰਸੁ ਲੇ ਧਨ ਕੀਆ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

The wife takes flowers, and fragrance of betel, and decorates herself.
ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੇ ਸੁਰਮਾ, ਫੁੱਲ ਤੇ ਪਾਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ,
ਸੇਜੈ ਕੰਤੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਏਵੈ ਭਇਆ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
Line 11
But her Husband Lord does not come to her bed, and so these efforts are useless. ||2||
(ਪਰ ਜੇ) ਖਸਮ ਸੇਜ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਆਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਸਗੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਣ ਇਹ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ) ॥੨॥

Third Mehl:
ਧਨ ਪਿਰੁ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਬਹਨਿ ਇਕਠੇ ਹੋਇ ॥

They are not said to be husband and wife, who merely sit together.
ਜੋ (ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ) ਰਲ ਕੇ ਬਹਿਣ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਸਲ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਖਸਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਖੀਦਾ;
ਏਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਧਨ ਪਿਰੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
Line 12
They alone are called husband and wife, who have one light in two bodies. ||3||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਜਿਸਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਕੋ ਆਤਮਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਪਤੀ ॥੩॥

ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

Without the Fear of God, there is no devotional worship, and no love for the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ (ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗ ਸਕਦਾ)।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਭਉ ਊਪਜੈ ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ਰੰਗੁ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥

Meeting with the True Guru, the Fear of God wells up, and one is embellished with the Fear and the Love of God.
ਇਹ ਡਰ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲੇ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਡਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ) ਰੰਗ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਰੰਗ ਸਿਉ ਹਉਮੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਾਰਿ ॥
Line 14
When the body and mind are imbued with the Lord's Love, egotism and desire are conquered and subdued.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਨਾਲ) ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ) ਰੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਤਿ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥
Line 14
The mind and body become immaculately pure and very beautiful, when one meets the Lord, the Destroyer of ego.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਭਉ ਭਾਉ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥੯॥
Line 15
Fear and love all belong to Him; He is the True Lord, permeating and pervading the Universe. ||9||
ਇਹ ਡਰ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ (ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਮਿਲਦਾ) ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
